Since I started blogging it's been no secret that a favorite myth of mine, for this time of year, is the story of Hades and Persephone. In diving as deeply as I have into this I've noticed a particular trend related to this specific myth. When I was first introduced to it many of the versions I've found said that Persephone was, in fact, kidnapped and subsequently sexually assaulted by Hades. As time went on different versions of this myth came to light. One that comes to mind denoting this change was told in an episode, Hercules the Legendary Journey's, starring Kevin Sorbo. In that story, Hercules was, in fact, a mediator between Persephone, her mother Demeter and Hades. Persephone and Hades were only two lovers willling to do anything to be together instead of a victim falling in love with her kidnapper. That was what Demeter had to understand. In order to allow her child to live her adult life with Hades.
The version of the story that I uploaded last year to my PWH Facebook page tells Persephone's coming of age story. As she strives for her own identity away from her mother and at the side of a lonely ruler looking for his Queen. That partiuclar version of this myth is my favorite because I adore the idea of an idealistic maiden softening the disposition of a despondent monarch. That particular version of Hades isn't necessarily evil, but moody.
As the season of imbolc draws to a close giving way to Valentines Day I find it interesting that our mythology changes as we do. The story of Persephone and Hades is possibly a progenic example of the myth of a "good girl falling in love with a bad boy". That's what makes this story so endearing. As women have gained agency over their bodies, and their love lives, our mythology refelcts this. Still the same Gods and Godesses doing the same things they have always done but in a more enlightened way. Do you know any other myths that have chaged to reflect the values of our current society?
